The ambitious project to revive "Highlander" with Henry Cavill in the lead role is gaining significant momentum with the addition of acclaimed actors Russell Crowe and Dave Bautista to the cast.
Director Chad Stahelski, renowned for his work on the "John Wick" franchise, is at the helm of this new iteration. Henry Cavill is set to portray the immortal warrior Connor MacLeod. Russell Crowe has officially joined the film to play Ramirez, the mentor figure previously embodied by Sean Connery. This casting marks a reunion for Crowe and Cavill, who previously shared the screen in "Man of Steel." Dave Bautista is reportedly in final negotiations to take on the role of the primary antagonist, The Kurgan. Bautista's imposing physical presence is expected to make him a formidable opponent for Cavill.
Filming for the "Highlander" reboot is slated to commence in late September or early October 2025 in Scotland. The film is anticipated for release in 2027 or 2028. The project aims to honor the spirit of the original 1986 film while introducing a fresh perspective, incorporating elements from both the original movie and the popular TV series.
The ensemble cast, including Crowe and Bautista, adds considerable weight to the production, given their established track records in action and fantasy genres. Crowe, celebrated for his role in "Gladiator," is expected to bring depth to the character of Ramirez. Bautista, known for his portrayal of Drax in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is anticipated to deliver a powerful performance as The Kurgan. The film promises a blend of intense swordplay and expanded narrative, aiming to respect the legacy of "Highlander" while captivating new audiences with stunning visuals and dynamic fight choreography.
The screenplay is penned by Michael Finch, known for his work on "John Wick: Chapter 4," and the film is being produced under Amazon MGM Studios' United Artists banner.
