New documents released by the US House of Representatives Oversight Committee have revealed the extent of Lord Peter Mandelson's relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The documents include a ten-page tribute from Mandelson to Epstein for his 50th birthday, compiled by Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein's former associate.
In the tribute, Mandelson described Epstein as an "intelligent sharp-witted man" and his "best pal." The correspondence, dating back to 2003, predates the public accusations against Epstein. Further emails from 2008, after Epstein faced sexual abuse charges, show Mandelson offering support and advising him to "remember the Art of War" when dealing with prosecutors. Mandelson also urged Epstein to "fight for early release."
These revelations have led to widespread anger from Epstein's victims, who are calling for Mandelson's immediate removal from his diplomatic post. One survivor stated it was "disgusting" for someone in such a position to call a convicted pedophile their "best pal." Mandelson has since expressed deep regret for his association with Epstein, calling it an "albatross around my neck" and admitting he was "very, very sorry" for continuing the association for "far longer than I should have done." He claimed he was "deceived" by Epstein, whom he described as a "charismatic criminal liar," and stated he never witnessed any "wrongdoing" during their interactions.
The UK government, led by Prime Minister Keir Starmer, has defended Mandelson, asserting that proper procedures were followed during his appointment and highlighting his "important role" in UK-US relations. However, political pressure is mounting, with Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch calling the revelations "sickening" and "untenable," demanding Mandelson's immediate dismissal. Several Labour MPs have also joined the calls for his removal, questioning his suitability for the ambassadorial role.
The situation places Prime Minister Starmer in a difficult position, particularly with an upcoming state visit from President Trump. While Mandelson has been praised for his ability to foster relationships with the Trump administration, his past association with Epstein raises significant questions about his judgment and integrity. Mandelson's diplomatic future remains uncertain as calls for his resignation persist, with the expectation that further potentially damaging details may emerge.
