Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently emphasized that securing safety guarantees is a prerequisite for achieving a ceasefire in ongoing negotiations with Russia. In an interview with U.S. media, Zelensky stated that Ukraine would first consult with U.S. leaders and the European Union regarding the end of the conflict and the provision of clear security assurances before engaging in talks with Russia.
Zelensky expressed concern that if U.S. President-elect Donald Trump pushes for a ceasefire without providing strong security guarantees to Ukraine, both the U.S. and Ukraine could find themselves in a precarious situation should Russia launch new offensives thereafter.
As reported, Trump’s inauguration is scheduled for January 20. Zelensky indicated a desire to attend the inauguration, contingent upon receiving an invitation, stating, “I do not want to disturb anyone or cause any trouble. That's why I would only go if invited.”
On the military front, Ukrainian military advisor Sergei Leshchenko announced that Ukrainian forces are expanding their control in the Kursk direction. He noted that the operations include amphibious assault brigades and ground units equipped with advanced Western weaponry, ensuring comprehensive support.
Meanwhile, the Russian Defense Ministry reported on January 6 that Russian forces have fully seized control of the city of Kurakhove in the Donetsk region. The ministry claimed that Ukrainian forces in the area have suffered significant losses, with around 80% of personnel affected, totaling over 12,000 troops and nearly 3,000 pieces of equipment. The strong defensive position established by Ukrainian command in Kurakhove has complicated logistical and equipment support for Ukrainian forces in the Donetsk area.
Control of Kurakhove is expected to provide Russian troops with greater operational space, potentially accelerating their advances in the Donetsk region.
