South Korea and the United States are strengthening their collaboration in the shipbuilding sector, aiming to bolster both nations' naval capabilities and address regional security challenges. This partnership focuses on expanding maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) services, as well as exploring joint shipbuilding projects.
In April 2025, U.S. Secretary of the Navy John Phelan visited South Korea to discuss deepening cooperation with South Korean shipyards. During his visit, Phelan highlighted the importance of South Korea's shipbuilding capabilities and expressed interest in further collaboration to support the U.S. Navy's needs. He noted that South Korean shipyards are already conducting MRO of U.S. Navy ships in South Korea and have invested in American shipyards, emphasizing the potential for increased cooperation in the future.
Following this visit, in May 2025, South Korea's Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) and representatives from leading South Korean shipbuilding companies visited U.S. shipyards and met with the U.S. Navy's Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA). The delegation toured facilities and discussed opportunities for mutual cooperation, including potential participation in U.S. Navy projects and collaboration in advanced technology development for naval ships.
Additionally, in April 2025, South Korea's HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) and U.S. shipbuilder Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) signed a memorandum of understanding to enhance shipbuilding cooperation. This agreement aims to maximize production efficiency and share best practices to improve shipbuilding costs and delivery times. The partnership encompasses both military and commercial shipbuilding efforts, reflecting a comprehensive approach to strengthening bilateral ties in the maritime industry.
These initiatives underscore the growing strategic partnership between South Korea and the United States, with a shared commitment to enhancing naval capabilities and ensuring regional stability.
