YouTube has announced the rollout of an artificial intelligence (AI) system designed to identify users under 18 years old, even if they have not accurately declared their age during account creation. This initiative aims to provide a safer and more age-appropriate experience for younger users on the platform.
Starting August 13, 2025, the AI system will analyze various signals, including the types of videos users search for, the content they watch, and the duration of their account activity. Based on this analysis, the system will infer whether a user is under 18, regardless of the birthdate provided during account setup.
When the system identifies a user as a teen, it will automatically apply several protective measures:
Disabling personalized advertising: Preventing targeted ads to maintain privacy.
Activating digital well-being tools: Enabling features like "take a break" and bedtime reminders to promote healthy usage habits.
Implementing content safeguards: Limiting repetitive recommendations on sensitive topics to protect mental well-being.
If a user believes they have been incorrectly identified as under 18, they can verify their age by providing a government-issued ID, a credit card, or a selfie. Only users who are verified or inferred to be over 18 will have access to age-restricted content.
This development aligns with global efforts to enhance online safety for minors. Various countries and regions have been implementing stricter age verification laws to protect children from harmful online content. YouTube's proactive approach reflects its commitment to user safety and responsible content consumption.
Content creators may notice changes in their audience demographics, as some viewers may be reclassified as under 18. This could lead to a decrease in ad revenue due to the display of non-personalized ads to teen users. However, YouTube anticipates that the impact will be minimal for most creators.
