Russian researchers have developed a novel surgical approach to alleviate chronic pain in patients by removing the pancreas and transplanting the patient’s own insulin-producing cells into the liver. This method, aimed at addressing unbearable pain and the risk of pancreatic cancer, was recently detailed by the Russian Ministry of Education and Science.
In specific cases, total pancreatectomy is necessary, which subsequently leads to pancreatic diabetes. To combat this, scientists from a local university experimented with this surgical technique. Alexandra Kashina, director of the regenerative medicine laboratory, explained that the islet cells are isolated from the removed pancreas, purified, and then injected into the patient's portal vein, where they begin to secrete insulin and regulate blood glucose levels.
Two patients underwent this innovative procedure and reported a significant reduction in severe pain. However, doctors noted that the insulin secretion from the transplanted islets remains modest at this stage.
Experts emphasize the importance of early transplantation of islet cells before they become depleted due to prolonged illness.
