Antalya, Turkey - Excavations at the St. Nicholas Church in Demre, Antalya, have revealed a significant archaeological find: a sarcophagus made of local limestone within a two-story structure in the church's southern courtyard. This discovery may shed light on the history of the region and the legacy of St. Nicholas, a prominent figure in Christian tradition.
The excavation team, led by Associate Professor Ebru Fatma Fındık from Hatay Mustafa Kemal University, reached the sarcophagus lid during drilling operations in the 20-meter-long structure. The sarcophagus, approximately 2 meters long, features a vaulted roof and bears similarities to other sarcophagi found in the area.
Dr. Fındık indicated that fully uncovering the sarcophagus will take time, with the primary expectation being the discovery of an inscription that could clarify the identity of the individual interred and the period of the burial. Currently, only the lid and a small portion of the sarcophagus have been exposed, generating considerable interest in the academic community.
Prior to reaching the sarcophagus, animal bones and fragments of clay lamps were discovered, suggesting that this site may have served as a burial ground. These findings support historical sources regarding the burial site of St. Nicholas.
The exact location of St. Nicholas's grave has long been a mystery for historians and archaeologists. Some sources suggest that he was buried near a sacred site in the ancient city of Myra. The sarcophagus may be connected to this sacred area.
Dr. Fındık stated that this discovery could provide answers to questions about the burial site of St. Nicholas, noting, 'This finding may be the strongest archaeological evidence confirming the location of St. Nicholas's grave.'
The ongoing excavations, part of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism's Future Heritage Project, contribute significantly not only to regional history but also to global heritage. The sarcophagus found at St. Nicholas Church draws attention from both the Christian world and humanity at large.
Archaeologists are continuing their efforts to fully uncover the sarcophagus and conduct detailed examinations. The identity and period of the sarcophagus will be clarified following further analyses. However, this discovery has already sparked considerable excitement worldwide.
