In Jacksonville, Florida, an exciting event called the Right Whale Mosaic Project is set for January 25, 2025, at Main Beach Park in Fernandina Beach. Participants will create a life-size mosaic of the North Atlantic right whale using oyster shells, guided by local artist Lauri Holton.

The North Atlantic right whale is critically endangered, with fewer than 350 individuals remaining. This project aims to raise awareness about their plight, especially during the calving season from November to March when these whales migrate to warmer waters.

Currently, only about 70 reproductively active females exist, and the species faces severe threats from human activities, including fishing gear entanglements and vessel collisions. Since 2017, more than 20% of the population has been lost due to an Unusual Mortality Event.

To support this initiative, community members are encouraged to collect gray oyster shells and participate in the mosaic assembly. The event is open to all ages and skill levels, making it a perfect opportunity for families to engage in conservation efforts together.

Join this creative endeavor to help protect the majestic North Atlantic right whale and contribute to vital conservation awareness!
