Democrats Shift Stance on Immigration Legislation Ahead of Trump's Second Term

Washington, D.C. – As Donald Trump prepares for his second presidential term, a significant number of Democrats in Congress have begun to align with Republican priorities on immigration. On January 10, 2025, nearly fifty House Democrats joined Republicans in passing the Laken Riley Act, which enforces stringent measures against undocumented immigrants.

Previously dismissed as a conservative messaging bill, the Laken Riley Act mandates the detention of undocumented individuals accused of theft without bond, and allows state attorneys general to sue the federal government over immigration enforcement failures. The bill is expected to advance in the Senate, with several Democratic senators, including John Fetterman and Jon Ossoff, expressing support.

Fetterman, who has previously advocated for immigrant rights, stated his willingness to discuss the bill despite its controversial provisions. The American Civil Liberties Union and other civil rights organizations have condemned the legislation, arguing it undermines basic rights and due process.

In addition to immigration, discussions have emerged around Trump's proposals, including the potential acquisition of Greenland and renaming the Gulf of Mexico. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer indicated a willingness to collaborate with Trump on these matters, contingent upon addressing economic concerns for Americans.
