Poland's Baltic Sea Oil Discovery Marks Milestone in Energy Exploration

10:39, 28 July

Edited by: S Света

Central European Petroleum (CEP) has announced a significant oil discovery in the Baltic Sea, approximately 6 kilometers offshore from the city of Świnoujście, Poland. The Wolin East 1 (WE1) well, drilled to a depth of 2,715 meters, revealed a 62-meter hydrocarbon column with favorable reservoir properties for oil and gas production in the Main Dolomite geological formation. The discovered oil has an API gravity of 33.4, indicating a high-quality, light crude suitable for commercial extraction.

Initial estimates suggest that the Wolin East field contains substantial recoverable oil and natural gas resources. The broader concession area, covering 593 square kilometers, is projected to hold significant amounts of oil and gas. If confirmed, this discovery would represent one of the largest conventional hydrocarbon deposits in Europe in recent years.

CEP views this find as a foundation for the long-term, responsible development of Poland's offshore resources. The company is advancing conceptual infrastructure development studies utilizing the latest technology, aiming to integrate the Wolin East field into Poland's domestic energy portfolio. The development is planned to be technically sound, aligned with the country's strategic interests, and carried out in close cooperation with national stakeholders.

Polish authorities have acknowledged the potential impact of this discovery on the nation's energy security. The Undersecretary of State and Chief National Geologist, Krzysztof Galos, noted that if fully confirmed and developed, the Wolin East deposit could become Poland's largest oil and associated gas field to date, significantly contributing to reducing dependence on external hydrocarbon suppliers.

CEP, a Canadian-based exploration and production company with Norwegian investors holding a majority stake, holds and operates the Wolin license in northwestern Poland. The company is actively seeking development partners to advance the project and is open to partnership opportunities with experienced exploration and production companies.
