Haiti's Humanitarian Crisis: A Call for International Support Amid Escalating Violence

18:42, 01 August

Edited by: Татьяна Гуринович

The humanitarian situation in Haiti has reached alarming levels, with escalating gang violence and widespread displacement severely impacting the nation's stability and well-being. The United Nations reports that over 6 million people, nearly half of Haiti's population, are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance. This crisis is characterized by significant loss of life, mass displacement, and a deepening food insecurity crisis.

Between October 2024 and June 2025, nearly 5,000 people were killed due to escalating gang violence, primarily around the capital, Port-au-Prince. This surge in violence has displaced hundreds of thousands, contributing to a deepening humanitarian crisis and threatening the stability of both Haiti and its regional neighbors. The report highlights that state presence is weak in many areas, exacerbating human rights abuses outside the capital. Health infrastructures are collapsing, with major hospitals closing and less than 25% of facilities operational in affected regions. The violence has also impeded international aid efforts. UN officials emphasize the urgent need for increased international support to help restore order and assist the Haitian authorities in addressing both security and humanitarian challenges.

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has identified Haiti as having one of the highest proportions of acutely food-insecure people in any crisis worldwide. The WFP reports that more than half of the Haitian population, approximately 5.7 million people, are projected to experience acute food insecurity through June 2025. This situation is exacerbated by the displacement of over 1 million people, many of whom are seeking refuge in overcrowded and unsanitary conditions, with limited access to clean water, food, and healthcare.

In response to the escalating crisis, the United Nations has called for increased international support to assist Haiti in addressing both security and humanitarian challenges. The UN emphasizes the need for a comprehensive, rights-based response focused on restoring security, upholding the rule of law, and guiding the country back to stability, while meeting the immediate needs of the population. The international community is urged to provide urgent support to help Haiti navigate this crisis and work towards a more secure and prosperous future for its citizens.
