Argentina Requests UN to Urge UK to Resume Falklands Talks

Buenos Aires, Argentina - On June 18, 2025, Argentina presented a request to the United Nations Special Committee on Decolonization (C-24) for the United Kingdom to resume negotiations on the sovereignty of the Malvinas Islands (Falkland Islands).

The event, led by Argentine Foreign Minister Gerardo Werthein, saw Argentina reaffirming its sovereignty claims over the Malvinas, South Georgia, South Sandwich Islands, and surrounding maritime areas.

Argentina's stance is rooted in the historical context of the UK's occupation in 1833, which Argentina considers an act of force and a violation of its territorial sovereignty.

Werthein criticized the UK's refusal to engage in dialogue and denounced the disproportionate British military presence in the islands.

Argentina urges the UK to comply with UN resolutions and resume talks to find a peaceful solution in accordance with international law.

The C-24, established in 1961, examines colonial situations and aims to advance decolonization, as recognized by UN resolution 2065 in 1965.

The conflict between Argentina and the UK over the islands resulted in a war from April 2 to June 14, 1982, with significant casualties.

The event highlights the ongoing dispute and Argentina's persistent efforts to reclaim sovereignty over the islands.
