Ireland's Public Transport Transformation in 2025

Edited by: Татьяна Гуринович

In 2025, Ireland is undergoing a significant transformation of its public transport infrastructure, focusing on sustainability, accessibility, and safety. The government's commitment is evident through substantial investments and strategic initiatives aimed at modernizing the nation's transport landscape.

The Department of Transport has allocated an additional €2.9 billion in capital funding, bringing the total to €3.9 billion. This funding supports major projects like the DART+ Programme and the expansion of bus services. The Connecting Ireland Rural Mobility Plan has expanded bus services, leading to a 110% growth in patronage over four years.

The government is investing heavily in cycling and walking infrastructure, with €1 million daily allocated for this purpose. Budget 2025 includes free child fares on Public Service Obligation services for children aged 5-8. To support the expansion, the government approved 450 additional work permits for mechanics.

Despite these advancements, challenges remain regarding the reliability and cost of public transport. The price structure has led to concerns about cost-effectiveness compared to private car use. Ireland's public transport sector in 2025 reflects a commitment to modernization and sustainability.

Ongoing efforts are necessary to address public concerns and ensure the continued success of these programs. The expansion of public transport aims to improve connectivity and reduce reliance on private vehicles, contributing to a more sustainable future.
