Syrian FM Visits Iraq Amidst Regional Talks

Syrian Foreign Minister, Asaad al-Shabbani, visited Baghdad on Saturday, marking his first official trip to Iraq since the formation of the new Syrian government. Iraqi government spokesman, Basim al-Awadi, welcomed the visit, emphasizing Iraq's desire for increased cooperation with Syria. Al-Awadi stated Iraq's readiness to support Syria, particularly in addressing the repercussions of the Syrian situation and embracing new developments. He highlighted Iraq's commitment to non-interference in Syrian affairs and its willingness to accept Syrians amidst ongoing challenges. The visit aims to strengthen diplomatic ties and foster collaboration between the two neighboring countries. Discussions will encompass various areas of mutual interest, including economic, investment, and security matters. Iraq's Foreign Minister, Fuad Hussein, affirmed Iraq's ongoing consultations with international and regional partners to establish a common vision for a comprehensive political process in Syria, ensuring the participation of all Syrian factions. Hussein also met with German Foreign Minister, Tobias Lindner, in Munich, where he emphasized Iraq's commitment to following developments in Syria, especially concerning the presence of numerous refugees near its borders. Lindner expressed Germany's support for Iraq and its efforts to achieve stability in the region. Both ministers acknowledged the importance of continued cooperation on various issues, including security and the establishment of new Syrian institutions.
