On July 26, 2025, the United Kingdom and Australia signed a 50-year treaty in Geelong, Australia, enhancing their defense cooperation under the AUKUS framework. This agreement focuses on the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of SSN-AUKUS submarines, marking a significant milestone in bilateral relations.
The treaty aims to bolster the capabilities of both nations' submarine programs, contributing to regional stability and security. It also emphasizes the development of personnel, infrastructure, and regulatory systems necessary for Australia's nuclear-powered submarine program. Additionally, the agreement supports increased port visits and the rotational presence of a UK Astute-class submarine at HMAS Stirling under Submarine Rotational Force – West.
Both countries have committed to upholding the highest non-proliferation standards, ensuring that the nuclear propulsion technology is used solely for peaceful purposes. The treaty aligns with international obligations, including the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and the South Pacific Nuclear Free Zone Treaty.
This partnership is expected to create thousands of jobs, strengthen economies, and provide new opportunities for industry partners in both nations. It also reflects a shared commitment to maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific region.
