China, Russia Agree To Sign Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone Treaty

Kuala Lumpur, July 6, 2025 - Significant developments have emerged from the recent ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM) held in Kuala Lumpur and regarding the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone (SEANWFZ) Treaty.

On July 3, 2025, China announced its support for the SEANWFZ and its readiness to discuss the matter with ASEAN nations. Malaysian Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan confirmed that both China and Russia have agreed to sign the treaty.

The United States is currently reviewing the treaty. The AMM, chaired by Malaysia's Foreign Minister, focused on ASEAN Community-building, addressing regional and international issues.

The meeting also discussed ASEAN's engagement with external partners and Timor-Leste's full membership. The inclusion of China and Russia in the SEANWFZ Treaty is a step towards regional disarmament. The outcomes of the AMM are expected to influence ASEAN's strategic direction.
