Luxembourg's Belval to become a smart city living lab with Smartspires

Edited by: Татьяна Гуринович

Belval in Luxembourg is set to become a next-generation smart city. This is thanks to the launch of SmartSpires, a €3.1 million EU-backed initiative. It merges densified 5G, edge computing, and AI technologies into a unified urban infrastructure.

The project unites 5SKYE, Gcore, LIST, and Orange Luxembourg. They will deploy at least three intelligent urban towers across the campus. These "smart spires" will function as multifunctional infrastructure nodes.

Equipped with ultra-fast 5G, edge computing, IoT sensors, and AI, they will power real-time services. These include crowd analytics, smart mobility, and intelligent waste management. The towers are expected to begin rolling out in late 2025.
