Lampedusa, Italy – July 7, 2025. Filippo Grandi, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, will conclude his mandate with a symbolic visit to Lampedusa — an island playing a key role in the reception of migrants in the Mediterranean.
Grandi will visit the Pelagie Islands as part of a UNHCR delegation on Wednesday, July 10. His visit underscores the need for international cooperation to manage migration flows effectively and humanely, and also recognizes Sicily's efforts in the field of humanitarian reception.
President of the region Renato Schifani called this gesture "a recognition of Sicily's contribution" and noted the significant role of local medical and rescue services working in the context of intense migration.
