Mexico City, June 26, 2025 - The Mexican Secretariat of Foreign Affairs (SRE) announced the unanimous ratification of the "Agreement under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction," also known as the High Seas Treaty.
Adopted in June 2023, the treaty aims to establish a legal framework for the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction, covering nearly two-thirds of the world's oceans.
The agreement addresses four key areas: marine genetic resources, marine protected areas, environmental impact assessments, and capacity building and technology transfer.
Mexico's ratification underscores its commitment to ocean protection and marine biodiversity, aligning with global conservation and sustainability goals. The treaty's entry into force requires ratification by at least 60 countries.
The SRE emphasized the importance of this step for global ocean governance and international cooperation in protecting the oceans, highlighting that it is the responsibility of the entire international community to protect them.
