Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, May 26, 2025 - Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has called on ASEAN leaders to expedite the adoption of a legally binding Code of Conduct for the South China Sea during the ASEAN summit in Kuala Lumpur. He emphasized the importance of safeguarding maritime rights, promoting regional stability, and preventing miscalculations at sea.
Marcos's appeal occurred amidst escalating geopolitical tensions, particularly between China and ASEAN members like the Philippines and Vietnam, in the contested waters. Recent incidents, including actions by the China Coast Guard, highlight the urgency of establishing the code. The Philippines hopes the Code of Conduct will be signed by 2026.
Beyond maritime security, President Marcos advocated for a stronger regional approach to climate change, pushing for increased climate financing and sustainable practices among ASEAN nations. The summit also addressed economic volatility and digital disruption, focusing on building a resilient and future-ready ASEAN.
