Baltimore, MD – March 14, 2025 – Significant federal funding cuts to the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) have led to the termination of over $800 million in grants at Johns Hopkins University and its affiliates, including Jhpiego and the Center for Communication Programs (CCP). The cuts resulted in the loss of more than 2,200 jobs globally, with 1,975 positions eliminated across 44 countries and 247 in the U.S., primarily in Baltimore. An additional 107 employees will face reduced schedules. USAID, a major funding source for Jhpiego and CCP, supported programs addressing tuberculosis, malaria, maternal health, HIV/AIDS, and vaccine hesitancy. Despite the setbacks, Johns Hopkins University aims to continue its global health initiatives through existing partnerships and by seeking new collaborations. Jhpiego will focus on maternal and newborn health, infectious diseases, and strengthening global health security. CCP received a waiver to continue mpox prevention efforts in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Department of International Health will persist in its work with communities and institutions to save lives, despite anticipated increases in preventable illnesses and decreased access to healthcare.
