UN Extends Haiti Security Mission Amidst Escalating Gang Violence

Edited by: Татьяна Гуринович

Port-au-Prince, Haiti - July 3, 2025 - The United Nations Security Council extended the mandate of the Kenya-led Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission in Haiti until October 2, 2025, amidst a worsening security crisis.

Armed gangs control approximately 85% of Port-au-Prince, leading to significant displacement and a deepening humanitarian crisis. Over 1,000 people were killed between December 2024 and March 2025 due to gang violence.

The MSS mission, however, remains under-resourced, with only 991 personnel deployed out of the 2,500 initially planned. Haitian authorities have called for a formal U.N. peacekeeping mission, but efforts have stalled due to resistance from China and Russia.
