Syria's Druze Demand Self-Determination Amidst Sweida Unrest

Edited by: Татьяна Гуринович

Hundreds of Druze demonstrators converged in Sweida and surrounding towns on August 16, 2025, to voice their demand for self-determination. This marks the largest protest since the sectarian clashes that erupted in July, and notably, it is the first time the Druze community has rallied under the explicit slogan of self-determination. The demonstrations highlight deep-seated grievances and aspirations for greater autonomy within Syria's complex ethno-sectarian landscape.

The unrest follows violent confrontations on July 13 between Druze militias and Sunni Bedouin tribes, which escalated into broader sectarian violence involving government forces. Druze groups and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights have accused Damascus of complicity with the Bedouin Sunni tribes and of committing atrocities against the Druze community. The Syrian government has established an investigative committee, with findings expected within three months. Some demonstrators were seen waving Israeli flags in a gesture of gratitude for external support during the conflict. The July clashes resulted in approximately 1,600 fatalities, with a significant number of Druze civilians among the deceased. The Syrian military had declared a ceasefire following the initial outbreak of violence. The Druze, a religious minority, constitute a significant population in Syria, particularly in the Sweida Governorate where they form the majority. The current demands for self-determination represent a notable shift from previous calls for protection within the existing state structure, signaling a potential recalibration of regional dynamics. This assertion of Druze identity and political aspirations occurs against a backdrop of broader sectarian tensions in Syria, with the involvement of external actors adding further complexity to the nation's political climate. The effectiveness of the ongoing investigation into the violence is a critical factor in de-escalating tensions.
