Mexico to elect judges nationwide in unprecedented vote

Edited by: gaya ❤️ one

Mexico is holding a nationwide election on Sunday to elect judges at all levels. Over 7,000 candidates are vying for more than 2,600 open positions, including seats on the Supreme Court, federal district, and circuit courts, as well as state and local courts.

The election is considered a first of its kind, with voters casting ballots for all of the country's judges, half now and half in 2027. Critics fear the vote could be vulnerable to political manipulation or criminal groups, potentially undermining the judiciary's independence.

Experts warn that the complexity of the election, with numerous candidates and limited information, could lead to uninformed voting. Some worry this could erode the judiciary's role as a check on other branches of government.
