Bolivia's presidential Election: Evo Morales Barred as 10 Candidates Register

Edited by: Татьяна Гуринович

Bolivia's registration window for presidential candidates closed on Tuesday, marking the end of Evo Morales' attempt to run for a fourth term. A constitutional court upheld the ban on individuals serving more than two presidential terms, preventing Morales from running. Morales, who served as president from 2006 to 2019, has challenged his exclusion, leading to protests by his supporters. Morales' Movement to Socialism (MAS) party is now fragmented, with multiple factions vying for the presidency. Eduardo del Castillo, backed by incumbent President Luis Arce, Senate President Andronico Rodriguez, and Eva Copa, are among the candidates. Ten candidates in total will compete in the August 17 election amid a deep economic crisis and rising discontent.
