Evo Morales Resigns from MAS Party After 26 Years Amidst Presidential Bid

Former Bolivian President Evo Morales formally resigned from the Movement for Socialism (MAS) party on Thursday, February 27, 2025. Morales led the party for 26 years. His legal team confirmed the resignation was submitted to the Supreme Electoral Tribunal on Wednesday. Morales, distanced from both the MAS and the government of his former ally Luis Arce, announced his presidential candidacy for the upcoming August 17 elections with the Frente para la Victoria. The Constitutional Court considers Morales ineligible due to already serving the two presidential terms allowed by the Constitution. He insists on competing in the general elections. Morales accuses Arce's government of judicial persecution to exclude him from the electoral race. He faces an arrest warrant for failing to appear in court regarding alleged abuse of a minor.
