ESA and Playmobil Debut Mars Exploration Toy Line to Foster STEM Interest
Edited by: Tetiana Martynovska 17
The European Space Agency (ESA) and Playmobil have launched the 'ESA Space Range by PLAYMOBIL,' a new series of space-themed play sets designed to translate European ambitions in Mars exploration into educational toys for younger audiences. The collection officially entered the market on January 9, 2026, with distribution planned across Europe, Mexico, and the United States to maximize initial global reach.

The product line features four distinct sets: the Mars Research Rocket, the Mars Exploration Rover, the Space Glider, and the Astronaut with Robot. A notable detail emphasizing educational fidelity is that the Mars Exploration Rover set directly mirrors the tooling intended for the ExoMars Rosalind Franklin rover mission, which is currently scheduled for a 2030 deployment. This strategic alignment between the scientific agency and the toy manufacturer integrates authentic mission elements into consumer products.
Key figures present at the launch included ESA's Head of the Communication Department, Anne-Sophie Bradelle, Playmobil CEO Bahri Kurter, and ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher. Bradelle stated that the partnership successfully embodies the spirit of ESA Strategy 2040 by extending Europe's space aspirations through innovation and education. Kurter noted the objective transcends simple play, aiming instead to cultivate wonder in children regarding the tangible experience of exploring Mars.
This consumer-facing initiative supports ESA's overarching Strategy 2040, which seeks to solidify Europe's standing as a preeminent global space power over the next fifteen years. The strategy is structured around five thematic goals: Protecting our Planet and Climate, Exploring and Discovering, Strengthening European Autonomy and Resilience, Boosting European Growth and Competitiveness, and Inspiring Europe. The toy launch coincides with other significant 2026 ESA milestones, such as the Smile mission launch and the BepiColombo spacecraft's arrival at Mercury, intended to amplify public engagement.
The collaboration builds upon ESA's existing Mars commitment, including the 2030 ExoMars rover mission, and previous partnerships, such as the 2021 Mars Expedition set. Furthermore, ESA is actively pursuing lunar ambitions through its Moonlight programme and the development of Argonaut, its first cargo lunar lander. Playmobil, which has produced toys since 1974, is concurrently executing its own strategic reorientation under the motto 'The future is now,' seeking to strengthen brand relevance and engage younger demographics by transforming real scientific concepts into hands-on play sets.
