President Trump Launches 'Project Genesis' to Accelerate Scientific Discovery Through AI Integration

On November 24, 2025, President Donald Trump formally initiated 'Project Genesis' by signing an Executive Order. This strategic undertaking is designed to deeply embed artificial intelligence into the core of fundamental scientific research, simultaneously bolstering U.S. national security interests. The scope of this new program is monumental, drawing comparisons to landmark historical efforts such as the Manhattan Project and the Apollo Program. Its central objective is ambitious: to double the output and productivity of American science and engineering sectors within a single decade.

The responsibility for executing Project Genesis falls primarily to the Department of Energy (DOE), overseen by Energy Secretary Chris Wright. Guiding the inter-agency coordination is Michael Kratsios, the Assistant to the President for Science and Technology, who has been appointed to lead this crucial initiative. Project Genesis will mobilize the entire network of 17 DOE National Laboratories, alongside key academic institutions and private industry partners. The goal is the creation of a unified, open-cycle platform.

This integrated platform will leverage the nation's most powerful federal supercomputers and massive datasets. The purpose of this infrastructure is twofold: to train foundational scientific AI models and to develop sophisticated AI agents capable of automating complex research workflows. This technological leap is intended to break new ground across several critical domains vital to U.S. leadership.

The priority areas targeted for breakthrough discoveries include securing American energy dominance, specifically through advancements in nuclear fusion and fission technologies. Furthermore, the initiative will focus heavily on biotechnology, the development of critical materials, quantum information sciences, and the semiconductor industry. The Executive Order mandates strict timelines for implementation. The DOE must identify all available computational resources within 90 days of the order, and the initial datasets must be cataloged within 120 days.

The private sector is positioned as a cornerstone of this public-private partnership model. Notably, Amazon Web Services (AWS) has publicly committed to investing up to $50 billion to expand its AI and high-performance computing infrastructure specifically for U.S. government contracts, with work commencing in 2026. AWS CEO Matt Garman stated that these substantial investments are designed to dismantle technological bottlenecks that have previously hampered government progress, directly supporting the priorities outlined in the July AI Action Plan.

These AWS investments are projected to inject nearly 1.3 gigawatts of computing power into secure environments, such as the AWS Top Secret regions. This capacity will directly fuel the mission's objectives by accelerating time-sensitive, critical research tasks. It represents a significant commitment to underpinning the national scientific effort.

While the initiative draws historical parallels, analysts have pointed out that the Executive Order itself does not allocate new budgetary funding, instead relying on language that directs action 'within existing appropriations.' Nevertheless, major technology firms, including Nvidia, AMD, Dell, and HPE, are lining up as ready partners. These companies are poised to engage on projects already slated for execution within the National Laboratories. Ultimately, Project Genesis firmly establishes artificial intelligence at the epicenter of long-term strategic competition, aiming to cement technological superiority for the United States.
