Australia's Home Battery Revolution: Powering a Sustainable Future

16:09, 02 August

Edited by: an_lymons vilart

The Australian Government has launched the Cheaper Home Batteries Program, offering a 30% discount on the upfront cost of installing small-scale battery systems alongside new or existing rooftop solar panels. This initiative aims to enhance energy storage capabilities and promote the use of renewable energy sources across the nation.

Under the program, households and small businesses can receive a discount based on the usable capacity of the battery, with the rebate amount decreasing annually until 2030. The program is administered through the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES), which has been expanded to include batteries. Eligible participants can access the discount via accredited solar and battery retailers and installers. To qualify, installations must comply with relevant state and territory electrical safety regulations and be performed by accredited professionals. Additionally, the battery system must be connected to a new or existing rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) system. Standalone battery systems without an associated solar PV system are not eligible for the rebate. The program is open to all Australian households and small businesses, with no income-based restrictions. Each property is eligible for one rebate, and the battery system must have a usable capacity between 5 kWh and 100 kWh. Batteries installed before 1 July 2025 are eligible, provided they are not commissioned until that date. The rebate is delivered as an upfront discount through the SRES, with the value of the discount determined by the battery's usable capacity. The discount amount will gradually decrease each year until the program concludes in 2030. For more detailed information on eligibility and program specifics, refer to the official government resources.

This program represents a significant step towards a more sustainable and resilient energy landscape in Australia, encouraging the adoption of renewable energy technologies and reducing reliance on traditional power grids.
