June 15, 2025, Trenton, New Jersey: State lawmakers are focusing on offshore tidal and wave energy as an alternative renewable energy source.

Assembly Bill No. 1478 was advanced by the Assembly Telecommunications and Utilities Committee. The bill directs the Board of Public Utilities (BPU) to approve a pilot project for wave and tidal energy.

The pilot program will gather data to evaluate the long-term feasibility of the technologies. The BPU and the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) will conduct a comprehensive study within 12 months of the pilot's completion. It will assess environmental, economic, and technical viability.

Within 15 months after the pilot, a report will be submitted to the governor and legislature. This report will include findings and policy recommendations, including a strategic plan. The plan will establish generation targets for 2030, 2040, and 2050.
