Conference on 'green' hydrogen in Belgrade
The upcoming Third Belgrade Green Hydrogen Conference, themed "Green Hydrogen as a Signpost of the Energy Transition," is scheduled to take place on March 17 and 18, 2026. Hosted at the prestigious Hyatt Regency hotel in Belgrade, this landmark event is designed to serve as a nexus for primary stakeholders in the energy transition, drawing participants from 24 diverse nations across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.
This iteration of the conference is positioned as a pivotal platform where the regional discourse moves decisively beyond theoretical frameworks and strategic planning. The primary objective is to shift the collective focus from the initial stages of conceptualization toward the tangible, practical realization of hydrogen energy projects, marking a new phase in the regional energy evolution and industrial application.
Serbia is currently making significant strides in establishing a robust and comprehensive legislative foundation to facilitate the rapid growth of its domestic hydrogen sector. The nation has articulated clear and ambitious production targets, aiming to generate 5,100 tons of green hydrogen by 2035, with a more extensive long-term goal of reaching 20,600 tons by the year 2050. These specific objectives are intricately linked to Serbia’s broader, overarching energy strategy, which envisions a transformative shift where approximately half of the country's total electricity production will be derived from renewable energy sources (RES) by the year 2030.
As the proportion of intermittent renewable energy within the national grid continues to expand, the technical challenge of maintaining system stability and balancing supply with demand becomes increasingly prominent. Consequently, the vital role of hydrogen in enhancing grid flexibility and bolstering regional energy security has emerged as a central theme for the upcoming discussions. Experts will explore how hydrogen can act as a storage medium and a stabilizer, highlighting its necessity in a modern, decarbonized power system that relies heavily on wind and solar power.
A cornerstone of the conference program will be a high-level panel discussion featuring the chief executives of major regional power utilities, representing a unified front for Balkan energy cooperation. This session will include the directors of EPS from Serbia, ERS representing Republika Srpska, EPBiH from Bosnia and Herzegovina, EPCG of Montenegro, and ESM from North Macedonia. These leaders will discuss the integration of hydrogen into their existing portfolios and the collaborative efforts required to build a cross-border hydrogen economy.
The international significance of the gathering is further underscored by the active participation of influential organizations such as Hydrogen Europe and Hydrogen Valley, alongside the Hungarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Furthermore, the presence of representatives from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the German development bank KfW highlights the financial commitment to developing sustainable infrastructure throughout the Western Balkans, ensuring that projects have the necessary backing to move from paper to reality.
International experts are slated to deliver comprehensive presentations and analytical reports focusing on various investment models and the overall bankability of hydrogen-based initiatives. A key metric under scrutiny during these sessions will be the Levelized Cost of Hydrogen (LCOH), which serves as a critical indicator of the economic competitiveness and commercial viability of green hydrogen production. By analyzing LCOH, stakeholders can better understand the price points at which hydrogen becomes a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels in industrial and energy applications.
Additional specialized sessions will delve into the complexities of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and its potential impact on industrial export competitiveness within the European market. Discussions will also cover the sophisticated management of energy surpluses and the essential development of the physical infrastructure required for hydrogen transport and storage. The event is professionally organized by the Hydrogen Project Implementation Cluster (H2 Cluster) and the "Energija Balkana" portal, with significant institutional backing provided by the Renewable Energy Sources of Serbia association.
The official opening ceremony will be graced by the presence of several high-ranking diplomats, including Her Excellency Anke Konrad, the Ambassador of Germany, and Her Excellency Pernille Dahler Kardel, the Ambassador of Denmark, along with the Ambassador of the United Kingdom. Their participation serves as a clear signal of the strategic importance that green hydrogen holds for the future of regional energy security and international cooperation, reinforcing the conference's role as a catalyst for change.
