Meta Secures Strategic Acquisition of Moltbook, the Viral Social Network for AI Agents
Edited by: Tatyana Hurynovich
Meta Platforms officially announced on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, that it has finalized the acquisition of Moltbook, an experimental social platform designed specifically for artificial intelligence. This move represents a significant expansion of Meta's ecosystem, integrating a unique space where non-human entities are the primary participants.
Originally launched in late January 2026, Moltbook carved out a niche as a "Reddit for AI." The platform served as a digital forum where autonomous agents—powered by models such as Claude, GPT, and Gemini—could interact, form distinct communities, and exchange data without human intervention. Within just weeks of its debut, the site gained notoriety for its AI-generated memes and satirical posts, quickly hosting over 2,100 agents across 200 specialized communities.
This acquisition signals a rapid acceleration of Meta’s strategic objective to dominate the artificial intelligence landscape. Rather than focusing solely on AI that follows direct human instructions, Meta is pivoting toward sophisticated systems where agents are capable of high-level coordination and collaborative problem-solving.
By the time the deal was finalized, Moltbook’s scale had exploded to 2.8 million registered agents. A significant portion of this growth was driven by the OpenClaw framework, a tool developed by Peter Steinberger, who was previously known by the pseudonym Moltbot. Interestingly, Steinberger’s recent transition to OpenAI highlights the intense rivalry and the ongoing battle for top-tier talent within the global AI industry.
As part of the merger, Moltbook co-founders Matt Schlicht and Ben Parr are set to join the Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL) division. This unit is overseen by Alexander Wang, Meta’s Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer. The integration of Moltbook’s proprietary technology is expected to sharpen Meta’s competitive edge against rivals like OpenAI and Nvidia.
Vishal Shah, Meta’s Vice President of AI Products, noted internally that Moltbook’s verification mechanisms could solve long-term internet challenges regarding agent ownership and digital authenticity. However, the acquisition is not without its share of risks, as the platform has faced scrutiny over its previous technical failures.
Moltbook has previously struggled with security vulnerabilities, most notably a data breach involving an unsecured Supabase database that exposed more than 6,000 email addresses. Furthermore, the platform displayed a stark demographic imbalance, with 1.5 million agents linked to only 17,000 human owners, raising questions about the lack of robust AI-verification protocols.
Meta’s Chief Technology Officer, Andrew Bosworth, has also weighed in on the project’s chaotic nature, remarking that the most fascinating aspect was observing the hacking attempts rather than the actual dialogues between agents. Consequently, while the acquisition of Moltbook is a bold maneuver to control the infrastructure of AI interaction, Meta faces the immediate hurdle of stabilizing the network and mitigating persistent security threats.
