Lenovo Unveils Production Model of ThinkBook Plus Gen 6 Rollable with Expandable OLED Screen

At the recent CES 2025 event held in Las Vegas, Lenovo officially transitioned the ThinkBook Plus Gen 6 Rollable from a conceptual prototype into a commercially ready device. This unveiling marks a significant milestone, introducing a laptop featuring a physically extendable display to the consumer market.

The centerpiece of this innovative hardware is its dynamic OLED screen. Driven by internal micromotors housed within the hinge mechanism, the display can transform its size in approximately 10 seconds. When retracted, the screen presents as a standard 14-inch panel with a 5:4 aspect ratio and a resolution of 2000x1600 pixels. Activating the expansion feature—which can be triggered either by a key press or a gesture recognized by the integrated 5-megapixel IR webcam—increases the screen size to 16.7 inches. This expanded state boasts a portrait-oriented 8:9 aspect ratio and a resolution of 2000x2350.

This expanded viewing area offers nearly 50 percent more screen real estate than the base configuration. This larger surface is cleverly optimized for multitasking, easily accommodating two 16:9 format windows side-by-side or providing an ideal vertical canvas for reviewing lengthy documents. It truly changes the game for mobile productivity.

Under the hood, the system is powered by the Intel Core Ultra 7 258V processor, part of the Lunar Lake family and manufactured using a 3-nm process. This CPU configuration includes four high-performance Lion Cove P-cores paired with four energy-efficient Skymont E-cores. Graphics processing is handled by the integrated Intel Arc 140V solution. Memory specifications include 32 GB of LPDDR5X RAM clocked at 8533 MHz, complemented by a 1-terabyte PCIe Gen 4 SSD for storage. Furthermore, the device integrates a Neural Processing Unit capable of 47 TOPS, ensuring robust performance for artificial intelligence tasks, including full support for Microsoft Copilot+ features.

While the engineering is certainly groundbreaking, this advanced design introduces certain trade-offs regarding portability and ergonomics. The laptop, presented in a Luna Grey finish, measures approximately 19.9 mm thick and weighs between 1.63 kg and 1.69 kg, making it heavier than typical 14-inch laptops. The display structure itself leverages insights gained from Samsung Display's expertise in foldable panels, utilizing Eco² OLED technology. Durability testing suggests the mechanism is rated for a minimum of 30,000 open/close cycles and 20,000 rolling cycles. Connectivity options are modern, featuring two Thunderbolt 4 ports, a 3.5 mm audio jack, and support for the latest Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4 standards.

Lenovo has set the starting price point for the ThinkBook Plus Gen 6 Rollable in the range of 3300 to 3500 US dollars. Despite the impressive visual specifications—including 100% DCI-P3 color gamut coverage, a 120 Hz refresh rate, and 400 nits of brightness—this high initial cost, coupled with the physical constraints inherent in a rollable design, firmly positions this machine as a niche product. Ultimately, it serves as a powerful demonstration of Lenovo's capability to bring complex, rollable display technology into mass production.
