Open-back headphones with AI
Huawei FreeClip 2 Open-Ear Earbuds Launch with Comfort-Focused Design and AI Features
Edited by: Tetiana Pin
Huawei has introduced the FreeClip 2 open-ear earbuds to the global audio market, aiming to set a new standard for the category by ensuring the ear canal remains unobstructed for enhanced environmental awareness. This device is positioned for continuous, all-day use, addressing the needs for safety and communication required in contemporary urban settings by allowing users to maintain auditory connection to their surroundings while listening to media.
The global unveiling of the FreeClip 2 emphasized a lightweight design philosophy centered on user comfort and situational awareness, following an earlier presentation during Paris Fashion Week. Initial market availability is scheduled with a pre-sale commencing in Turkey on December 12th at 12:12, although a definitive worldwide release date has not been specified, succeeding its initial introduction in China. Key technical specifications highlight the focus on wearability: each earbud weighs 5.1 grams, a 9 percent reduction from the previous model. Audio fidelity is managed by 10.8 mm dual-diaphragm drivers, engineered to improve low-frequency response, a typical challenge for open-back designs.
Durability is addressed with an IP57 rating for the earbuds against dust and water ingress, while the accompanying charging case carries an IP54 rating. A significant advancement is the integration of Huawei's third-generation AI chip and Neural Processing Unit (NPU) to power smart functionalities, marking a step up from the previous generation's dual-microphone system. To mitigate sound leakage, a common concern with open-ear audio, the device incorporates proprietary Reverse Sound Field technology, which directs sound waves toward the ear canal while actively countering outward leakage to maintain call privacy in public spaces.
Battery performance is rated at nine hours of use on a single charge, extending to a total of 38 hours with the charging case. The case itself is noted to be 17 percent smaller and 14 percent lighter than its predecessor. The physical design adheres to the 'C-bridge Design' philosophy, utilizing a Comfort Bean, a Listening Ball, and a C-shaped bridge constructed from softened liquid silicone and memory metal, shaped using data from over 10,000 human ear models to ensure a pressure-minimizing fit. The design is also left-right agnostic, allowing either earbud to be worn in either ear without compromising the audio experience.
The introduction of the FreeClip 2 aligns with a noticeable consumer shift toward wearable technology that balances immersive sound with necessary environmental perception. The device also incorporates Bluetooth 6.0 and supports codecs such as L2HC, alongside HarmonyOS AI features like real-time translation across 20 languages, positioning it as a modern accessory from an institution with a history in hardware development.
