Apple's First Foldable iPhone, Codenamed V68, Expected in 2026 with iPad mini-like Display

Apple, a corporation renowned for its measured approach to product introductions, is reportedly targeting September 2026 for the unveiling of its inaugural foldable smartphone. This device, currently known internally by the codename V68, is anticipated to launch concurrently with the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max models, potentially carrying the moniker iPhone Fold.

Industry analysts foresee Apple's entry into the foldable device market as a significant catalyst for the entire sector. Counterpoint Research estimates suggest that this move could drive a substantial 46% surge in foldable panel shipments by the year 2026. Furthermore, IDC projects that in its very first year of presence, Apple could capture over 22% of the market in terms of unit volume and an impressive 34% in terms of revenue share, largely due to the expected premium pricing of the device.

A defining characteristic of this forthcoming model, setting it apart from current competitor offerings, is its unique design, internally dubbed the 'passport' form factor. Unlike the typical 'book-style' foldables that tend to elongate vertically when closed, the V68 is designed to be wider than it is tall when folded shut. Preliminary dimensions suggest a closed profile of approximately 120.6 mm in height, 83.8 mm in width, and a thickness of 9.6 mm. This horizontal orientation, reminiscent of a scaled-down iPad mini, could significantly enhance one-handed grip when folded and improve its portability in smaller pockets.

Information derived from CAD schematics indicates that the internal display will boast a diagonal measurement of roughly 7.7 to 7.8 inches. This screen is expected to feature an aspect ratio close to 4:3, aligning with Apple's established tablet design language, and could achieve a resolution up to 2713x1920 pixels. This specific ratio is intended to optimize content viewing, particularly in landscape mode. For the external screen, estimates vary, suggesting a diagonal size ranging from 5.3 to 5.5 inches, and it is likely that this cover display will incorporate a punch-hole cutout for the front-facing camera system.

From an engineering standpoint, Apple is placing a high priority on achieving a crease-free display experience, a goal that might necessitate slightly greater overall thickness compared to some current market alternatives. The device’s chassis is expected to utilize a hybrid construction incorporating both titanium and aluminum elements to ensure robust durability. Current manufacturing trials, overseen by Foxconn at their facility in Guanlan, China, reveal that the display production phase is encountering notable defect rates, which is common for nascent foldable technology during its early development stages.
