Apple Introduces AirPods Max 2 Featuring H2 Chip and Lossless Audio Support
Edited by: Tetiana Pin
Technology firm Apple announced the AirPods Max 2, the successor to its premium over-ear headphones, on March 16, 2026. This launch marks the first significant update to the model approximately six years after the original debuted in December 2020, which utilized the H1 chip and a Lightning port. The new iteration integrates Apple's H2 chip, previously featured in the AirPods Pro 3, to facilitate substantial improvements in Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) and intelligent audio processing.
The integration of the H2 chip enables several new software-driven functions, managed through optimized Digital Signal Processing (DSP) aimed at superior sound quality. Key among these is Adaptive Audio, which dynamically adjusts the balance between ANC and Transparency modes based on ambient environmental noise. Additionally, the Conversation Awareness feature automatically lowers media volume and enhances transparency when the user initiates speech, while Voice Isolation prioritizes the user's voice during calls. The device also incorporates Live Translation, leveraging Apple Intelligence for real-time conversational translation.
In terms of acoustic performance, Apple states that the ANC effectiveness on the AirPods Max 2 is up to 1.5 times greater than the prior generation, attributed to new computational audio algorithms. The hardware now includes a new high dynamic range amplifier for cleaner audio output and enhanced spatial localization within Spatial Audio content. Critically for professional users, the headphones support 24-bit/48 kHz Lossless audio when connected via the USB-C cable, which also enables mixing tracks with Personalized Spatial Audio and head tracking.
The physical design retains the established premium construction, including the stainless steel frame, mesh headband, and rotating ear cups, consistent with the original model. The product is offered in five colors: midnight, starlight, orange, purple, and blue. Despite the technological advancements, the carrying pouch remains unchanged from the previous version. Apple confirmed the use of recycled materials in several key components and in the fiber-based packaging.
The retail price for the AirPods Max 2 is set at $549 in the United States, maintaining the launch price of its predecessor. Pre-orders for the device are scheduled to begin on March 25, 2026, with initial shipments slated for early April 2026. This refresh strategically aligns the AirPods Max line with the computational audio capabilities now standard across Apple's audio portfolio.
