In 2025, Porsche is advancing electric vehicle (EV) technology with developments in battery design and sustainable recycling. The company is actively developing AC battery technology and leading a pilot program for EV battery recycling.
AC Battery Technology
Porsche Engineering is developing an 'AC battery' concept that integrates a modular high-voltage battery, a pulse inverter for converting DC to AC, and a Modular Multilevel Series Parallel Converter (MMSPC) to manage voltage and enable direct AC grid charging. Prototypes are undergoing vehicle testing.
The goals of this design are to improve efficiency, reduce weight, and increase reliability. The MMSPC enhances safety by allowing system shutdown during servicing or after a collision. It also features a 'limp-home' mode, where failing battery cells can be bypassed.
EV Battery Recycling Pilot Program
Porsche has launched a pilot project for EV battery recycling, demonstrating a commitment to a circular economy. This initiative involves shredding used batteries into 'black mass,' containing materials like lithium, nickel, cobalt, and manganese. These materials are extracted and refined for reuse in new batteries, reducing reliance on raw material extraction. Approximately 65 tons of black mass have been produced through this process.
