Porsche is introducing an 11 kW wireless charging system, set to debut with the all-electric Cayenne Electric, aiming to simplify electric vehicle charging. This technology allows drivers to charge by simply parking over a floor-mounted base plate, eliminating the need for cables.
The Porsche Wireless Charging system comprises a floor plate, installed in various parking locations and connected to the power supply, and a receiver unit on the vehicle's underbody. Charging begins automatically when the vehicle is correctly aligned over the plate. Operating at 11 kW, the system matches the speed of conventional wired AC wall boxes and achieves an energy transfer efficiency of up to 90 percent.
The Cayenne Electric will be the first Porsche model to offer this wireless charging option. For enhanced safety, the system includes motion and foreign object detection, automatically halting charging if a person or metallic object is detected between the vehicle and the plate.
Porsche plans to launch the wireless charging system in Europe in 2026, with a subsequent global rollout. The floor plate will be available for purchase through Porsche Centres and the Porsche Shop online. A prototype of the Cayenne Electric, featuring this wireless charging, will be showcased at the IAA Mobility show in Munich from September 9 to 14, 2025. This prototype will feature a special fluorescent paint that illuminates during charging, displaying a dynamic camouflage pattern developed by Style Porsche.
This advancement in EV infrastructure is expected to significantly improve user convenience and potentially boost electric mobility adoption. Porsche's research indicates that approximately 75 percent of charging for its electric models occurs at home, highlighting the importance of this home-centric solution. The upcoming Cayenne Electric is also anticipated to deliver impressive performance, potentially reaching up to 1000 horsepower and achieving a 10-to-80 percent charge in approximately 16 minutes.
