LG Energy Solution and Samsung SDI plan to install LFP cell production lines in their US factories, jointly operated with General Motors. GM aims to replace NCM cells with cost-effective LFP cells in mid-range models like Chevrolet Bolt, Equinox, Blazer, and Silverado EV. This switch could cut battery costs by 20-30%, reducing EV costs by at least $6,000. Samsung SDI will convert part of its Indiana joint venture with GM to accommodate LFP production. LG Energy Solution will retrofit parts of GM's Ultium Cells joint venture plants in Tennessee and Ohio for LFP cell production. LG and GM are also focusing on lithium-manganese-rich (LMR) batteries, planned for market launch in 2028.
