Platform X Introduces Mandatory AI Content Labeling and Sanctions for Undisclosed AI-Generated War Content
Edited by: Tatyana Hurynovich
The social media giant X, formerly known as Twitter, has officially launched a comprehensive system for the mandatory and automated labeling of content generated by artificial intelligence. This strategic move is designed to bolster transparency and mitigate the spread of misinformation across the platform.
Under the new guidelines, any visual or video content identified as having a synthetic origin must be clearly marked with the phrase "Made with AI" immediately upon upload. This tool aims to help users evaluate information credibility, particularly during geopolitical crises like the recent events in the Middle East.
In addition to general labeling, X has significantly tightened its policies regarding unlabelled AI-generated content specifically related to military actions and global conflicts. Nikita Beer, the Head of Product at X, stated that creators who fail to comply will face substantial financial repercussions.
For a first-time violation, the platform will impose a 90-day suspension from its Creator Revenue Sharing Program. Subsequent infractions will lead to a permanent revocation of all monetization privileges for the offending account.
To address sophisticated images where the line between reality and synthetic creation is blurred, the platform will leverage Community Notes. This community-driven verification system provides an additional layer of scrutiny for deceptive media.
This multi-tiered strategy reflects X's commitment to more explicitly regulating synthetic media within its digital ecosystem. These measures are also positioned as a core component of a broader strategy to stabilize advertising revenue by enhancing platform trust.
These developments are deeply intertwined with previous regulatory hurdles involving Grok, the platform's proprietary AI chatbot. In January 2026, X was forced to implement stricter limitations on Grok following international backlash over deepfakes and inappropriate content.
In response to these incidents, the European Commission utilized its authority under the Digital Services Act (DSA) to mandate data preservation. X must now maintain all internal data related to Grok's operations until the conclusion of 2026.
This requirement serves as a preemptive measure to ensure the Commission has full access to relevant documentation for oversight. Nikita Beer, who leads these product initiatives, previously founded the viral applications Gas and TBH, which were acquired by Discord and Facebook.
While X is currently formalizing its penalties, it follows in the footsteps of Meta and YouTube, which implemented similar requirements in 2024. This shift represents a broader industry trend toward formalizing disclosure standards in the era of generative artificial intelligence.
