Google Tests AI-Powered Audio Overviews in Search

Edited by: Veronika Radoslavskaya

Google is experimenting with AI-generated audio overviews in its search results, a move that has sparked debate about the future of information access.

The new feature, called "Search Labs | Audio Overview," transforms search results into short, conversational audio summaries. It uses Google's Gemini model to analyze information from various websites and generate a transcript read by two AI-generated hosts.

This feature is designed for users who prefer audio formats or are multitasking. It integrates with Google's AI Overviews and NotebookLM, an existing tool for creating AI-driven podcasts. Users can access the feature by opting into the test in Google Labs.

The audio overviews cite their sources, but the initiative raises concerns. Critics worry that Google's emphasis on AI-generated content may reduce traffic to original sources. There are also concerns about the accuracy of the information provided by the AI.

Google reports a more than 10% increase in the use of AI Overviews. The company continues to integrate more AI into its search business.
