Google Commits $15 Billion to Launch India’s Premier AI Hub in Visakhapatnam

Google has unveiled a monumental financial commitment of $15 billion, scheduled for disbursement between 2026 and 2030, to establish its inaugural Artificial Intelligence (AI) center in India. Located in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, this ambitious project was first signaled in October 2025 and formally introduced during the India AI Impact Summit 2026, held in New Delhi from February 16 to 20. This initiative represents Google’s most significant investment in the Indian market to date and will serve as the company's largest AI facility outside of the United States. The project is a cornerstone of the "Viksit Bharat 2047" vision, which aims to transform India into a preeminent global destination for AI infrastructure.

The facility, officially designated as "AI City Vizag," is designed as a sophisticated, multi-dimensional infrastructure hub. At its heart lies a massive data center campus boasting a gigawatt-scale computing capacity, equivalent to 1,000 megawatts. This immense power is intended to manage high-intensity AI workloads and cloud-based services, ensuring they meet the rigorous global performance standards of Google’s flagship products like Search and YouTube. To bolster this digital architecture, Google is also spearheading the development of a new international subsea backbone cable. This link will integrate Visakhapatnam directly into the corporation's global network, serving as a vital supplement to existing connectivity nodes in Mumbai and Chennai.

The execution of this large-scale venture involves strategic collaborations with prominent Indian industrial leaders. AdaniConnex—a joint venture between Adani Enterprises and EdgeConneX—has been tasked with the construction of the data center campus. This partnership is expected to contribute an additional $5 billion in supplementary funding to the project. Furthermore, Bharti Airtel will play a critical role by establishing the necessary cable landing stations and expanding the fiber-optic networks required to support the new hub. A defining characteristic of the initiative is its dedication to environmental responsibility; Google is developing dedicated clean energy plants to power the data center, aligning with the Adani Group’s broader strategy to create an integrated platform for data centers powered by renewable generation.

Beyond its technological implications, the investment is forecasted to generate a profound socio-economic shift in the region, potentially creating more than 180,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities. The strategic importance of the project was highlighted during a high-level meeting between Google CEO Sundar Pichai and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where both leaders emphasized India's growing aspirations in the global AI landscape. By providing domestic access to high-performance computing, the center will empower Indian developers and startups while solidifying the technological alliance between the United States and India. Additionally, Sundar Pichai introduced the India-America Connectivity Initiative, a program focused on deploying new subsea cable routes to enhance AI-driven connectivity across the U.S., India, and the Southern Hemisphere.
