Google Docs Rolls Out Gemini-Powered Audio Summaries for Subscribers
Edited by: Veronika Radoslavskaya
Google began rolling out a new artificial intelligence feature in Google Docs on February 12, 2026. This capability leverages the Gemini AI model to generate concise audio overviews of document content, available in the web version of the platform. The feature builds on the existing Gemini-powered document reading introduced in August 2025, which played text sequentially.
The new Audio Summaries extract key information into briefings typically under three minutes long, using natural-sounding voices for enhanced user experience. The main advancement is the shift from simple reading to content synthesis: Gemini analyzes the document, identifies core themes, and creates a condensed overview. This helps knowledge workers quickly grasp essentials from lengthy reports or meeting notes during multitasking or commutes.
The feature integrates into the Tools menu of the web interface as the “Listen to document summary” option, alongside the existing “Listen to this tab.” Users can select voice styles ('narrator,' 'persuader,' 'coach') and adjust playback speed from 0.5x to 2x. Summary generation incorporates content from multiple Google Docs tabs for added relevance.
Access to Gemini-powered audio summaries is limited to paid Google subscriptions: Workspace Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, plus add-ons like Google AI Ultra for Business, Google AI Pro for Education, and individual Google AI Pro and Ultra plans. The rollout started on February 12, 2026, with gradual expansion; full availability across eligible domains may take over 15 days. Google notes there are no separate admin controls or end-user settings for this feature.
