Richmond County, North Carolina – Amazon is set to invest $10 billion in a new artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing campus in North Carolina.

The project, located in Richmond County, will be one of Amazon Web Services (AWS)'s largest new builds. It is expected to create at least 500 high-skilled jobs and stimulate thousands more in related industries.

The facility will be situated in the Energy Way Industrial Park. Amazon will fund upgrades to local utilities, including water, wastewater, and fiber-optic lines. The company has also launched the Richmond County Community Fund to support STEM education and workforce development.

AWS stated the investment responds to the growing demand for AI infrastructure. The company is also expanding data centers in Georgia and investing in AI startups like Anthropic.

This move highlights the intensifying competition among tech giants. Microsoft is building an AI hub in Wisconsin, and Google is expanding its data center operations in North Carolina. Meta and Apple are also investing heavily in AI infrastructure.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has called generative AI a "once-in-a-lifetime type of business opportunity." Data centers are becoming crucial for the AI race, requiring high-performance computing and advanced cooling systems.

The new data center is expected to boost North Carolina's tech ecosystem. Amazon's investment underscores the race to build the infrastructure needed to lead the AI future.
