San Francisco, CA

- Elon Musk, backed by xAI and other investors, has launched a $97.4 billion bid to acquire the non-profit arm of OpenAI. Musk, a co-founder who left in 2018, aims to return the company to its original open-source, safety-focused mission.

CEO Sam Altman swiftly rejected the offer, sarcastically responding on X, "No thank you but we will buy Twitter for $9.74 billion if you want."

Musk's offer intensifies a long-standing dispute over OpenAI's shift to a for-profit model. He argues the company has strayed from its initial goals. The investor group includes Valor Equity Partners, Baron Capital, and Atreides Management.

Musk stated, "It's time for OpenAI to return to the open-source, safety-focused force for good it once was."
