Racing or Management? Why Max Verstappen Is Ready to Walk Away From F1 by the End of 2026

Why Max Verstappen hates F1 2026 already

For Max Verstappen, racing has always been about raw speed rather than battery management. However, Formula 1 has changed so significantly by 2026 that the four-time world champion has begun openly discussing his retirement. What previously seemed like a negotiation tactic has developed into a genuine identity crisis for the greatest driver of the modern era.

The heart of the conflict lies within the new technical regulations. These new cars require drivers to maintain an obsessive level of control over battery levels. Max, who is used to attacking every meter of the race, has called this "anti-racing." In his view, modern F1 has turned into "Mario Kart," where the winner is not the fastest driver, but the one who manages virtual resources most effectively.

The situation is further complicated by Red Bull Racing's struggles. The transition to their own Red Bull Powertrains units—in partnership with Ford—has so far proven difficult. Ninth place in the championship after the initial rounds is not what a driver of his caliber expected. When the joy of driving vanishes and victories are replaced by a fight for points, even massive salaries are no longer a sufficient motivation.

Will Max actually leave? At 28, he has it all: titles, money, and status. His interest in endurance racing (Le Mans) and his own GT3 team are not just hobbies, but a ready-made "Plan B." If the FIA does not adjust the active aerodynamics and energy consumption algorithms before the summer break, we risk losing the championship's main attraction.

Will this season be the final chapter for the "Flying Dutchman's" era of dominance? Formula 1 has always survived the departure of legends, but is it prepared to lose a champion who leaves not because of age, but because he is simply bored?
