Onosato Achieves Yokozuna Rank, First Japanese Sumo Wrestler Since 2017

Edited by: Anna 🌎 Krasko

Daiki Nakamura, known as Onosato, has been promoted to yokozuna, sumo's highest rank, by the Japan Sumo Association. This makes him the first Japanese wrestler to achieve this honor since 2017. The 24-year-old's promotion follows his victory at the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament and another prestigious tournament win in March.

Weighing 191 kilograms (421 pounds), Onosato aims to embody the essence of a yokozuna. He expressed his commitment to rigorous training to uphold the title's prestige. His achievement is particularly meaningful for his home prefecture of Ishikawa, which was devastated by an earthquake earlier this year.

Onosato hopes his success will bring joy to the affected community. His promotion sets the stage for a rivalry with Mongolia-born Hoshoryu, the other current yokozuna. They are scheduled to compete in a tournament in Nagoya in July.
