The Mynabirds Release Introspective New Album Amidst "Disarm Spotify" Campaign
Edited by: Inna Horoshkina One
The Mynabirds, fronted by Laura Burhenn, are set to release their new album, "It's Okay To Go Back If You Keep Moving Forward," on November 7, 2025. The album will be available on vinyl and most streaming platforms, with the notable exception of Spotify. This release is accompanied by the lead single, "Ramona, Patron Saint Of Silence," described by Burhenn as a hymn to resilience born from personal loss and reflection.
The new body of work represents a deliberate shift for The Mynabirds, with Burhenn focusing on a stripped-back sonic landscape. Recorded live with producer Pierre de Reeder, the album features three new compositions alongside acoustic reinterpretations of seven existing Mynabirds tracks. Burhenn has characterized this process as an "ego death," returning to the fundamental act of songwriting at the piano for therapeutic release.
In conjunction with the album's release, Burhenn is launching the "Disarm Spotify" campaign. This initiative is a direct response to Spotify CEO Daniel Ek's investments in defense technology. As a result, Burhenn and other artists are choosing to remove their music from the platform to protest Ek's investments in AI-powered military technology. Artists like King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard and Deerhoof have also joined this protest.
The single "Ramona, Patron Saint Of Silence" emerged from a period of intense personal grief for Burhenn. She views music as a form of medicine essential for survival, rather than a commodity. The album's title, "It's Okay To Go Back If You Keep Moving Forward," suggests a journey of self-discovery and acceptance, acknowledging that progress can involve revisiting foundational elements. The stripped-back recording process, emphasizing an authentic and immediate connection with the listener, reflects a commitment to genuine artistic expression.
