New Orleans Designated UNESCO City of Music

Edited by: Inna Horoshkina One

New Orleans, the undisputed birthplace of jazz and a global beacon of musical diversity, has officially been inducted into the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN). This designation grants the city the prestigious title of UNESCO City of Music, recognizing its unparalleled contribution to global culture.

This landmark decision was formalized in Bogotá, Colombia, on October 31, 2025. The recognition acknowledges the profound worldwide influence of New Orleans' musical heritage—a vibrant tapestry woven from foundational American genres including jazz, blues, gospel, and funk. These styles are intrinsically linked to the city's history, reflecting both deep-seated pain and an enduring spirit of freedom.

The Strategic Role of Culture

Established by UNESCO in 2004, the UCCN currently encompasses 407 cities across 100 countries worldwide. The network’s core mission is to leverage creativity as a strategic catalyst for sustainable development, addressing crucial economic, cultural, and environmental goals.

For New Orleans, achieving this status brings not only significant international acclaim but also concrete responsibilities. These obligations include sharing best practices and expertise, fostering robust partnerships with the private sector and civil society, and actively integrating culture and music into the city’s urban planning framework.

Mayor LaToya Cantrell emphasized that joining the UCCN opens up new avenues for local musicians. She highlighted the network’s potential to strengthen social cohesion and generate fresh economic opportunities driven by the music sector.

As Mayor Cantrell articulated, “New Orleans has always been more than just a city—it is a rhythm that unites people.”

A New Global Platform

Entry into the UCCN underscores the unique cultural contribution of New Orleans. The city now stands as one of only ten U.S. cities honored with this esteemed designation. This move not only pays homage to its rich past but firmly establishes New Orleans as a pivotal center for global musical dialogue in the 21st century.

The UNESCO recognition empowers New Orleans to influence the global World Heritage agenda and participate actively in major international cultural initiatives. This elevated status provides a powerful voice on the world stage, ensuring the city’s traditions resonate globally.

Industry leaders are already hailing this development as the “return of New Orleans to the world stage”—the place where the planet's heart beats to the infectious rhythm of jazz.

Rockin’1000 Takes Center Stage

Signaling this new era of cultural unity, New Orleans will host the first-ever U.S. performance of Rockin’1000 in January 2026. This massive global music project involves a thousand musicians and vocalists performing simultaneously at the Caesars Superdome arena.

Scheduled for January 31, 2026, the concert is set to be a powerful symbol of creative synergy and the living pulse of New Orleans—a city where music originates not merely on a stage, but deep within the heart of every listener and resident.
