How the song was born

The producers of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 called Christina to ask if she would write a track for the soundtrack. As a massive fan of Stephenie Meyer’s books—admitting herself that she was a true "Twihard"—Perri was given the chance to see the film six months before its release.

In 2011, American singer-songwriter Christina Perri gifted the world one of the most tender and moving ballads of the modern era, "A Thousand Years." While it was originally written for a specific story about a vampire and a human girl, the song has since become a definitive anthem for eternal love.

"I tried to step into the love story of Edward and Bella," Christina recalled, adding, "I'm not a vampire, though I'd very much like to be one." Although the song was originally intended for the main characters' wedding scene, it ultimately played during the end credits of Breaking Dawn – Part 1. For the second installment, Christina later recorded an acoustic version as a duet with actor and singer Steve Kazee.

Christina Perri co-wrote the song alongside producer David Hodges. The melody is simple and atmospheric, featuring primarily piano and soft, heartfelt vocals. Christina’s vocal range in the song spans from F3 to C5.

The meaning behind "A Thousand Years"

The lyrics serve as a confession of a love that transcends fear, time, and all obstacles. The protagonist is afraid to fall in love—"How can I love when I'm afraid to fall?"—yet all doubts vanish upon seeing her beloved. The chorus has become a literal manifesto of everlasting love:

I have died every day waiting for you Darling, don't be afraid I have loved you for a thousand years I'll love you for a thousand more

These words hold a particular weight for Edward and Bella, given that their love is truly immortal. However, the song's impact extended far beyond the Twilight franchise. People across the globe began choosing it for weddings, first dances, and even as a lullaby. Christina eventually recorded a lullaby version for her own child, and in 2025, a children's picture book based on the lyrics was released, reimagining eternal love as the bond between parent and child.

Success and statistics

Initially, "A Thousand Years" was a sleeper hit. It debuted at number 63 on the Billboard Hot 100 and peaked at number 31. In the United Kingdom, however, it climbed as high as number 11. Over time, the track has cemented its status as a genuine classic:

It has sold over 10 million copies in the U.S., earning a RIAA Diamond certification.

A YouTube phenomenon: The music video has surpassed 2 billion views.

The song remains a staple on adult contemporary radio and continues to be a favorite at weddings.

Why the song resonates

"A Thousand Years" is more than just a movie soundtrack. It is a universal story about hope, waiting, and the courage to love in spite of fear. Many listeners share that the song helps them believe that true love exists and can endure for "a thousand years and a thousand more."

Christina Perri herself has watched the song’s evolution with amazement. What began as a song for teenage Twilight fans grew into a wedding staple, and has now transformed into a gentle lullaby and a children's story about love.
